Young people are key to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s successful European path
The involvement of young people in the European integration process and their understanding of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s European path was one of the topics discussed between Elvira Habota, DEI Director, and Jurriaan Middelhoff, the Netherlands’ Ambassador for Youth, Education and Work, who today visited the Directorate with his delegation.
The meeting emphasised that young people are crucial to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s successful European path and should be active participants in decision making processes and reforms accompanying the accession process.
Director Habota highlighted that, according to the latest Public Opinion Survey on EU Membership conducted by the Directorate, the majority of respondents believe that young people would benefit the most from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s accession to the EU.
She added that the Communication Strategy of BiH’s institutions on the EU accession process identifies young people as a distinct target group, and that the Directorate, both independently and in cooperation with partners, continuously works on their inclusion.
“Young people will live in a society shaped by the policies and decisions taken during the accession process, which is why their support for this process is of particular importance. Therefore, we must provide them with clear, transparent and accessible communication, focusing not only on the technical aspects of accession but also on the tangible benefits they can gain from these processes,” Habota stated.
It was concluded that young people need to be further engaged in areas of direct interest to them, particularly those related to EU programmes for youth employment, education and mobility.
