Green light from the European Council is the strongest message about the progress of BiH
“Green light for the opening of negotiations is the strongest message so far about the progress Bosnia and Herzegovina has made. This message brings a surge of optimism for citizens, institutions, authorities and the entire BiH society. The decision is the result of invested efforts and a well-used geopolitical momentum”, said the Director of the Directorate for European Integration after the European Council had made a decision about the opening of negotiations with BiH. The decision was made by the EU member states at the session held on 21 March 2024 in Brussels.
Director Habota highlighted that the decision would have a positive impact on further reforms and economic development, adding that more work is yet to come for BiH authorities and institutions.
“It will not be an easy task, because the essence of negotiations is transposition and implementation of the vast bulk of EU legislation. The institutions at technical level have the necessary experience and knowledge and they have already conducted intensive preparations to respond to the tasks ahead “, said Habota.
The biggest responsibility will continue to be on the political level, noted Director Habota, because adoption of new EU related legislation is key for further progress.
“We have a path ahead of us that consists of several phases with many procedures, but the pace of progress will depend mostly on us and on the pace at which BiH authorities will do their part of work”, stated Habota.
